The Old San Antonio Road Posts and Markers in South Houston County

Zively placed ten oak survey posts in Houston County, three of which were in the southern part of the county shown on this map. The matching pink granite markers for all three are still on the Old San Antonio Road. The one closest to Crockett is a short distance away from its surveyed location, while the other two markers are at their original locations.

This marker is at a highway pulloff 1.3 miles northeast of FM 2967 on Highway 21. It is halfway between County Roads 3052 and 3060. The marker is on a culvert over a ditch, in a bed of asphalt road material in front of a pasture. There are historical marker signs a mile in each direction and on the other side of the highway, even though the granite OSR marker is the only object at the site.1

The top of this marker is very irregular. It is also tilted to the right.

Due to straightening and other changes in the course of Highway 21, this marker's original location is now on private land about 0.2 miles south of the highway. Its current location, about 0.5 miles southwest of its original location, is in a spot where Highway 21 and the Old San Antonio Road are one and the same. So, while the marker's location has been changed, its purpose of marking the OSR route has not.

The Texas Society DAR did not find this marker in its 1995-2001 rededication project. The coordinates given for it on the El Camino Real National Historic Trail Association's interactive map in 2013 were correct.

1Elsewhere in Texas, outside of Houston County, historical marker signs are not usually placed for OSR markers by themselves; they only have such signs when other historical markers are present with them.
