Cotton is Texas's top field crop. It grows best in warm or hot climates that receive moderate rainfall. With adquate irrigation, it can be grown in dry areas.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture groups counties in each state into agricultural districts according to factors such as soil type, elevation, temperature, and need for irrigation. Texas has 15 USDA agricultural districts.
